  2. INSTALLING YOUR SUPRAFAXMODEM ROM UPGRADE
  3.  
  4. Congratulations!  The enclosed ROM upgrade will increase your modem's 
  5. capabilities to provide even better performance than you've experienced so 
  6. far with your SupraFAXModem.  To upgrade your modem, please follow these 
  7. instructions carefully.

  10. IF YOU ARE UNEASY ABOUT PERFORMING THE UPGRADE YOURSELF
  11.  
  12. These instructions have been designed and tested to make the upgrade a fairly 
  13. simple task, even for someone who has never replaced a chip before.  Our hope 
  14. is that with these instructions in hand, you can install the new ROMs quickly 
  15. and easily, and be using your upgraded modem in a very short time.
  16.  
  17. However, if you are uneasy about performing the upgrade yourself, you also 
  18. have two other options:
  19.    Take the modem and the enclosed upgrade kit to the dealer you purchased it 
  20.        from, and ask them to install the upgrade.  
  21.    Have Supra perform the upgrade.
  22.  
  23. If you want Supra to perform the upgrade, follow these steps:
  24.    1.  Pack the modem and the enclosed upgrade kit in a sturdy shipping box.
  25.    2.  Send the box, via UPS or a similar carrier, to:
  26.         Supra Corporation
  27.         ATTN:  Modem Upgrade
  28.         7101 Supra Drive SW
  29.         Albany, OR  97321 USA
  30.        Upon receiving the box, we will install the upgrade and return your 
  31.        modem via UPS within a few days.  The upgrade and shipping back to you 
  32.        will be free.

  34. If you need further information, please contact Supra Technical Support as 
  35. described on page 4.

  38. BEFORE YOU START UPGRADING YOUR MODEM
  39.  
  40. NOTE ─ In these instructions, LEFT and RIGHT assume you are looking at the 
  41. front of the modem.
  42.  
  43.    1.  Discharge static electricity by touching something grounded, like a 
  44.        sink faucet or a metal computer case ─ touching the modem case is not 
  45.        enough.  Then until you complete the installation procedure, be 
  46.        careful to minimize static electricity; for example, don't rub your 
  47.        feet on carpet during the installation.  Like any chips, your new ROM 
  48.        chips can be ruined by excess static electricity.
  49.    2.  Make sure you have everything.  Everything you need for the upgrade 
  50.        should be included in your ROM upgrade kit:
  51.           2 ROM chips 
  52.           combination phillips/flathead screwdriver
  53.           these instructions
  54.    3.  To avoid confusion, leave the NEW ROM chips in the packaging they came 
  55.        in until after you have discarded the OLD ROM chips.
  56.    4.  Turn off the modem and disconnect all the cables connected to it.

  58. OPEN THE MODEM CASE
  59.  
  60.    5.  Use the provided phillips screwdriver to remove two screws from the 
  61.        bottom of the modem case.
  62.    6.  Unscrew and remove the ON/OFF button from the front of the modem.
  63.    7.  Remove the black plastic bezel from the FRONT of the modem, as follows:
  64.       a.  Slide the provided flathead screwdriver under the edge of the bezel 
  65.           on one side of the modem.
  66.       b.  Push the bezel slightly off the front of the case.
  67.       c.  Slide the screwdriver under the bezel on the other side of the 
  68.           modem.
  69.       d.  Slide the front bezel off the case and set it aside.
  70.    8.  Carefully slide the modem board all the way out of the case.  Once 
  71.        it's out of the case, hold the board by its edges as much as possible.

  73. CAUTION ─  Be very careful not to damage the board when handling it.

  75. REMOVE YOUR OLD ROMS
  76.  
  77.    9.  Locate the old ROM chips, labeled "87-3F" and "87-4F."  If you have 
  78.        earlier ROMs, the chip label may say A, B, C, D, or E in place of the 
  79.        F.
  80.   10.  Note the relative location and orientation of each of these chips.  
  81.        You'll need to know their location and orientation when you install 
  82.        the new ROM chips:
  83.        "87-3F" is closer to the back of the modem, and "87-4F" is closer 
  84.        to the front.  
  85.        Note a small notch on the top of each chip.  This notch is toward 
  86.        the LEFT of the modem (assuming you are looking at the front of 
  87.        the modem).

  89.    11. Use the flathead screwdriver to carefully lift and remove both of 
  90.        these chips ─ for best leverage, slide the screwdriver all the way 
  91.        under the chip, and tip the screwdriver from side to side to lift the 
  92.        chip.

  94. Note that you now have two empty sockets in which to install the new chips.

  100.    12. Set the old chips aside, being careful not to confuse them with the 
  101.        new ROM chips.  Wait to discard them until you have installed the new 
  102.        ROMs and know that your modem is working.

  107. INSTALL YOUR NEW ROMS
  108.  
  109.    13. Remove the new ROM chips from their packaging.
  110.  
  111.    14. If necessary, gently press the pins on one or both sides of the chip 
  112.        against a table top ─ as shown at right ─ so that the pins are 
  113.        perpendicular.  This will allow the pins to slide into the socket.
  114.  
  115.  
  116.    15. READ THIS ENTIRE STEP CAREFULLY BEFORE DOING IT.
  117.       CAUTION ─  Correct chip location and orientation are ESSENTIAL.  
  118.       If you place the chip in the wrong socket, or orient it incorrectly, 
  119.       the modem will not work.  
  120.  
  121.       LOCATION
  122.            "87-3" must be closer to the back of the modem, and "87-4" 
  123.         must be closer to the front.  
  124. ORIENTATION
  125.     Note a small notch on the top of each chip.  This notch must be 
  126.     toward the LEFT of the modem (assuming you are looking at the front 
  127.     of the modem).
  128.  
  129. After reading these steps, you will install the first chip as follows:
  130.  
  131.     a.  Hold the new chip labeled "87-4J" over the empty socket that is 
  132.         closest to the FRONT of the modem.  
  133.         NOTE ─ If you did not choose the Caller ID option, this ROM chip 
  134.            is labeled "87-4H."
  135.     b.  Make sure that the small notch on the top of the chip is toward 
  136.         the LEFT of the modem, away from the ON/OFF button.
  137.     c.  Carefully line up the chip's "feet" (pins) with the corresponding 
  138.         socket holes.  Make sure none of the pins are bent.
  139.     d.  With the chip fairly level, use your fingers to carefully push 
  140.         the chip into the socket until it is snug.  When the chip is 
  141.         installed correctly, it is level, and the top of the chip is at 
  142.         the same height as the large chip labeled "Rockwell."
  143.     e.  Now that you've read the instructions for Step 15, go ahead and 
  144.         install the chip.
  145.     16. Repeat step 15 to install the second chip, "87-3J," but install this 
  146.     chip in the socket that is closest to the BACK of the modem.  If you 
  147.     did not choose the Caller ID option, this ROM chip is labeled "87-3H."

  152. Replace the Modem Case
  153.     17. Slide the modem board back in the modem case, making sure the phone 
  154.     jacks and other sockets go in first, so they are at the BACK of the 
  155.     modem ─ if the modem does not slide in easily, a small component on 
  156.     the BOTTOM of the modem board, called a "heat sink" may have caught 
  157.     on the case.  If so, gently press on the heat sink until the modem 
  158.     board will slide into the case easily.  Do not push the heat sink any 
  159.     farther than necessary to slide the board.
  160.     18. Carefully snap the black plastic bezel back onto the front of the 
  161.     modem.  Getting the bezel to fit well is tricky; you may need to 
  162.     experiment a little to get it to fit.
  163.     19. Screw the ON/OFF switch back on the modem.
  164.     20. Screw the 2 screws back into the bottom of the modem.

  167. TEST THE INSTALLATION
  168.     21. Reconnect the modem and turn it on.  After about 20 seconds, the 
  169.     modem display should say "OK."  If it does, your upgrade is complete.  
  170.     Enjoy your modem!
  171.     
  172.     If the modem display does NOT say "OK," consider that one or more of 
  173.     the following may be causing a problem.  If these solutions don't help,
  174.     try the additional suggestions in the SupraFAXModem Reference Manual.
  175.         The modem is not connected properly.  Try disconnecting and 
  176.          reconnecting the modem, making sure that all connections are 
  177.          secure.
  178.         One of the ROM chip pins is bent.
  179.  
  180. After trying these suggestions and those in the SupraFAXModem Reference 
  181. Manual, try to reconnect and turn on the modem.  The upgrade is complete when 
  182. the modem display says "OK" within approximately 20 seconds after you turn it 
  183. on.  If you need further assistance, please contact Supra Technical Support.
